Emergency Shelter Fund for Clients

The emergency shelter fund provides a safety net for Duha’s clients in the event they need to leave their current residence without notice. In Niger, it is common for needy families without the means to afford rent or own land live in bukkas or temporary shelter structures which are made of sticks and tarp (read more about it here). They build these temporary structures on unused land in Niamey. However, their living situation remains unstable and precarious as landowners may ask them to leave at any time. This fund is intended to support our clients in these situations to build a new bukka once they find a new place to live.

Additionally, this fund may be used to support our clients who have successfully grown their business and have reached a point where they are able to start renting a place of their own. This would provide them with better living conditions including access to running water and electricity. These funds may be used to support them in paying their 3 month deposit while they will be responsible for paying the monthly rent.

All of our clients currently live in bukkas and have the long-term goal of renting a place or building a home on their own land in order to have stability and peace of mind.
